Habitat For Humanity: Gingerbread Competition

On December 12, 2012, the cafeteria of Stone Ridges was packed with gumdrops, M&Ms, and mounds of icing. Students gathered around tables to construct the finest house out of graham crackers, Twizzlers, and sour gummy bears. The Christmas Gingerbread House Competition was underway, and the scent of endless bowls of candy filled the air.

Habitat for Humanity school group at Stone Ridge raises awareness of the issue of homelessness and educates the student body of what they can do to help. In December, the leaders of the group, Olivia Sem, Catherine Ryan, and Lisa Adams, decided to host a fundraiser at the school to raise money to give to the organization.

Every year, the school group has a gingerbread house competition. During lunch, students pay to build the most fabulous and creative house out of graham crackers, frosting, and bowls of colorful candy. The winners received free Habitat T-shirts as a prize. This year, Habitat for Humanity SCG raised $123 for the organization.

Later in the year, the SCG is hosting another fundraiser, a cupcake sale with the theme of green (Habitat’s color), and also, some of the students will travel to D.C. to help build a house for others.
